Borussia Dortmund are reportedly in discussions with Karim Adeyemi over a contract extension as they look to tie down the German international for a longer term.

His current deal runs until June 2027 but the club wants to avoid the prospect of Adeyemi entering the final year of his contract without a new one in place.

For one, it would prolong the speculations of exit that have already been doing the rounds in 2026 while also potentially distracting the star from delivering his best.

Dortmund's new sporting director Nils-Ole Book has confirmed that discussions with Adeyemi would continue through the summer as they look to sort out the future of one of their key players.

""That is not the preferred solution. We will continue discussions with Karim and his representatives during the summer break.""
said Ole Book

Adeyemi's future has been a subject of widespread discussions this year as the player lost his place in the BVB XI and saw a dramatic decline in form after having begun the 2025-26 campaign in blistering fashion.

Five of his seven goals in the Bundesliga came in the first 18 games, netting only twice more from the next 10. It's also worth noting that he missed a couple of weeks in April with muscular problems which served to exacerbate his form.

Adeyemi's disciplinary issues - like when he kicked a water bottle towards the bench after being subbed off in a game and a rumored rift with head coach Niko Kovac - had also appeared to irk the Dortmund management.

All signs pointed towards a potential exit, but it's now clear that Die Borussen want to keep him as part of their long-term plans, perhaps as Adeyemi is still not in his prime - he's only 24 years old - and can develop further as a world-class prospect.

Managing director Lars Ricken admitted to facing challenges in negotiations but affirmed they are very much in talks with Adeyemi right now.

""The strengths of our players are well known to all clubs in Europe, including those of Karim Adeyemi. The situation is clear: Karim still has one year left on his contract, and we are currently in talks about an extension. Each party has its own ideas. It is not uncommon in contract negotiations for the terms not to align at every stage - not just in Karim's case. But that is exactly why we remain in dialogue.""
said Ricken

Adeyemi joined Dortmund in 2022 from Red Bull Salzburg and has since made 146 appearances in all competitions, scoring 36 goals and making a further 25 assists.
