Borussia Dortmund return to action in the Bundesliga on Friday as they host Werder Bremen at the Signal Iduna Park on matchday five. Niko Kovac's side are currently leading the title race with four wins in four following a bright start to their top-flight campaign, their best since 2015.
On the other hand, Bremen are down in eighth place of the league standings with two wins and seven points in the bag. The River Islanders shrugged off their opening day blues after the 4-1 thrashing by Freiburg to beat RB Leipzig and Augsburg at home, although questions remain on their pedigree away from home.
Here's how Dortmund Bremen stack up in their head-to-head record from the last five games:
Werder Bremen 1-2 Dortmund (March 2024)
Dortmund were desperately fighting to remain inside the top four Bundesliga places and came away from Bremen with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. First-half goals from Donyell Malen and Jadon Sancho had them 2-0 up at the break but Marcel Sabitzer's red card just moments before half-time threatened to open things after the break. But Justin Njinmah's 70th-minute strike wasn't enough to inspire a comeback.
Werder Bremen 0-0 Dortmund (August 2024)
The following season, Bremen and Dortmund met on matchday two and the former inflicted the BVB with their first setback of the season by holding them to a goalless stalemate. It was another tense affair between them, producing 10 cards including a red for the visitors again as Schlotterbeck was sent off after two bookings.
Dortmund 2-2 Werder Bremen (January 2025)
Dortmund's first match after sacking Nuri Sahin didn't go as planned, with the BVB throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Werder Bremen. Interestingly, Schlotterbeck was sent off again, marking the third game in a row between these sides where a Dortmund player saw red.
Dortmund 3-0 Werder Bremen (January 2026)
The BVB returned from the winter break in blazing form, scoring three goals in their first five games since the restart. Among their victims were Bremen, who fell to their heaviest defeat against Dortmund since 2021. Schlotterbeck, sent off in his last two appearances against the River Islanders, bagged the first goal to gain redemption, before Sabitzer and Serhou Guirassy followed suit in the second half.
Werder Bremen 0-2 Dortmund (May 2026)
Dortmund's final matchday of the 2025-26 season came away to Bremen and it was surprisingly a relaxed affair with no cards for either side. The Prussians were aiming to finish on a high but a goal remained elusive in the first half, until Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto broke the deadlock after the break.
