It's been five years since Borussia Dortmund last won a trophy. It's one of their longest droughts in recent memory.

Despite a solid campaign under Niko Kovac in 2025-26 season, the BVB ultimately fell short of their title aspirations on all fronts.

Bayern Munich were just too good to compete with in the Bundesliga, while their DFB-Pokal and Champions League runs fizzled out sooner rather than expected.

Die Borussen paid the price for being too sluggish at times, as those moments of defensive lapses came to bite them at the end with the team once again finishing without a silverware.

However, next season, the side will have one extra chance to lift a trophy, and it comes right at the start of the 2026-27 season.

Dortmund qualify for German Supercup

With Bayern Munich completing the league double, Borussia Dortmund have officially secured a place in the 2026 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

The Bavarians had already sealed their spot after the Bundesliga triumph, but their opponents were yet to be decided.

It was going to be either Dortmund or Stuttgart, who were in the German Cup finals again. Winning the same would have seen them qualify for the one-off cup for the third year in a row.

But a hat-trick from Harry Kane meant Bayern completed the league and cup double, thereby sending Dortmund through to the Supercup, marking their 13th appearance.

It's the most by a side behind only Bayern themselves, with the record German champions sealing a berth for the 19th time in history.

How BVB has fared in the Supercup before

Of their previous 12 appearances, Die Borussen have won and lost in equal measure with six each. Their last Supercup victory came in 2019, against Bayern Munich at the Westfalonstadion.

The side's last official participation in the cup though, was in 2021. Bayern were the opponents again but a double from Robert Lewandowski inspired them to a 3-1 win.

Should Niko Kovac's side prevail this time, it would mark an end to their seven-year wait to win the cup again while also bringing their long-endured trophy-drought to a close.

Failure to do so would mean a loss in the Supercup for the third appearance in a row, a feat they have not suffered before.

Der Klassiker in Supercup

Bayern and Dortmund have contested the Supercup on most occasions with nine in total; the record stands something like this: five wins for the Bavarians and four for the BVB.

It will be exciting to see if Dortmund can level the head-to-head score in the cup with a win on 22 August 2026. The venue is likely going to be Signal Iduna Park again.
