Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha is in the news again. After starring for Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he's now under Newcastle United's radar.
The Premier League side is keen to bring the midfielder to St James' Park after Bruno Guimaraes sealed a move to Arsenal.
His departure leaves a massive void in the attacking midfield position and the Toons have identified Nmecha as a potential replacement.
According to Sky, Newcastle are looking to make an offer in the range of €100 million and €120 million in the coming days, a sum that would make it difficult for Dortmund to retain Nmecha.
However, the answer really lies in Nils-Ole Book's words. The Borussia Dortmund sporting director recently revealed that they will hear offers only if 'astronomical sums' are involved.
The question now is, what qualifies as 'astronomical sum' for Dortmund? The figure that Newcastle are readying to bid is ideally no less astronomical. So, if an offer does arrive, would the club give in?
Dortmund reportedly view Nmecha as a key figure in their plans for 2026-27 season while Book, in the same breath, had also mentioned that it's "highly unlikely" to see him depart this summer.
In a further relief for the fans, BILD reports that the player has no intention of joining Newcastle in the near future.
For one, the club isn't really a favorite to win titles on any front, whilst a lowly 12th-place finish in the English top-flight last season means the side failed to secure European football altogether, let alone the Champions League.
However, Newcastle's coffers are filling up with a series of big money transfers as Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur for €108million while Anthony Gordon's departure to Barcelona fetched them another €80million. Now, Bruno Guimaraes is set to join Arsenal for approximately €87million too.
The Tyne-and-Wear side would naturally invest a portion of that into reinforcements and hope to finish inside Premier League's top-four places again next year. It will be interesting to see if Nmecha is indeed tempted by the ongoing squad rebuilding project in Newcastle.
Dortmund value the star highly but vetoing any offer for him this year would also mean Nmecha's €80 million release clause would come into effect next year, which is roughly €20million less than what Newcastle would be offering.
Even if Nmecha remains in Dortmund this summer, it's likely that transfer links could crop up again next year.
