Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck is all set for his second FIFA World Cup tonight as Germany take on debutants Curacao in their opening fixture of Group E.
The BVB faithful will be eagerly watching their key defender strut his stuff for Die Mannschaft on the biggest stage of them all as Schlotterbeck is coming off the back of an impressive campaign with the club.
What Schlotterbeck brings to Germany
Centre-backs hardly come better than Nico Schlotterbeck, a top-class defender with exemplary positional awareness and expansive passing range that make him crucial to building plays from the back.
At 6ft 3in, the 26-year-old boasts a menacing frame that allows him to bully attackers in possession with his aggressive defensive play. He never shies away from a tackle while Schlotterbeck's excellent game-reading ability saw him average 4.5 clearances for Borussia Dortmund last term.
He will be tasked with keeping forwards such as Ecuador's Enner Valencia and Ivory Coast centre-forward Nicolas Pepe quiet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when Germany take on both these sides in their group.
Offensively too, Schlotterbeck can be just as effective. His propensity to switch out to wingers with long, diagonal passes is well-known while the young gun has frequently ranked highly for progressive passes that are crucial in helping his teams create attacking opportunities.
With five goals in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, Schlotterbeck was the joint-most prolific defender in the German top-flight alongside teammate Ramy Bensebaini, which underlines his offensive qualities too.
Schlotterbeck's record with Germany
After coming through with various German youth sides, Nico Schlotterbeck finally broke into their senior team in 2022 against Israel in a friendly encounter, completing full 90 minutes and then playing the entirety of their clash to the Netherlands too a few days later.
At the last World Cup, Schlotterbeck played the full game against Japan which Germany lost 2-1 before coming off the bench in a cameo appearance against Spain. He watched his side bow out in the first round in the final group fixture against Costa Rica, where the defender was an unused substitute.
It's only after the Euro 2024 championship that Schlotterbeck began featuring regularly for Germany and even started many of the fixtures he was called-up for; he played thrice in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, as Die Mannschaft kept a clean sheet each time.
With each passing international window, the Borussia Dortmund defender has grown in influence on the side and will be hoping to make a mark for them on the world stage too.
