Waldemar Anton was one of the unsung heroes in the Borussia Dortmund squad for the 2025-26 season. He may not always grab headlines like Serhou Guirassy or Karim Adeyemi do, but he quitely emerged as a valuable figure in the squad for his consistently top-notch performances in their defensive set-up.
In fact, Anton was the chief linchpin in their backline over the highly-rated Nico Schlotterbeck, who lacked consistency at times, and started in every single Bundesliga game for the BVB last season except for two in December which Anton was forced to miss due to a hamstring injury.
Now, the 29-year-old star is all set for the World Cup with Germany.
What Anton brings to Germany
A commanding presence in defense blessed with proficient technical ability, Anton is a ball-playing centre-back also known for his unerring passing accuracy which makes him a key to starting build-up plays from the back.
He's also adept at stepping out of his defensive line to intercept any incoming cross or a pass, driven by his exceptional concentration and vigilance. He also never shies away from a pass, having completed the fifth-highest number of passes in the Bundesliga last season with 2183.
At 6ft 2in, Anton boasts a towering stature on the field that allows him to dominate aerial duels too, averaging nearly three per league game in the 2025-26 season. He never shies away from a tackle either, registering 73 - only Eintracht Frankfurt's Nathaniel Brown (83) made more in the competition.
How was Anton performed with Germany
Having been eligible for Russia and Uzbekistan, Waldemar Anton chose to represent Germany after having played for their youth sides between 2016 and 2019. Five years later, he got called-up to their senior team as the defender made his international debut for Die Mannschaft in March 2024 during their 2-0 win over France.
Anton also featured at the Euro 2024 later that year, coming on in their last-16 win over Denmark for his first appearance at the tournament while completing 90 minutes of their quarter-final loss to Spain.
The Dortmund defender made six appearances for Germany in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and on the back of a strong run with the club side, was also summoned to Julian Naglesmann's suad for this month's showpiece.
Anton still has only 13 caps to his name, one of the lowest in the German squad, but is likely to start in defense for their World Cup fixtures.
