Borussia Dortmund are set for a massive squad overhaul this summer. With many first team stars touted to leave, the club might also welcome a slew of new faces as they look to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title again next season.
Among the players they are linked with, is a 16-year-old boy wonder Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha Berlin, who has alerted Europe with his promising displays for the side in the 2. Bundesliga this season.
Now according to German news outlet Bild, the Black and Yellows are leading the race to sign the teenager, who is witnessing a transfer battle wage as domestic rivals Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are said to be interested in him too.
But it doesn't stop there. Eichhorn's talents have been noticed in foreign leagues too, as European giants Manchester City and Real Madrid have been purpertedly linked with the wonderkid too who appears to be a hot commodity right now.
The player has a meager release clause of €10-12 million but the Old Lady are keen to keep him as they aim to launch another promotion bid next season.
Hertha's sporting director Benjamin Weber told Bild:
"“There is still no decision. We are in contact with Kenny’s parents. We will do everything in our power to convince him to stay here for another year.""said Weber
However, the prospect of Eichhorn staying put in the face of so many big suitors appear difficult especially as Hertha Berlin failed to achieve a promotion to Bundesliga this season.
With 51 points in 33 games, Stefan Leitl's side are currently in sixth place of the 2. Bundesliga standings ahead of the final matchday this weekend as another year in the second division beckons them.
But Eichhorn personally scripted history on Sunday when he became the youngest ever goalscorer in the 2. Bundesliga by scoring in their 2-1 win over Greuther Fürth, as the young gun came up with their opener on the day.
At 16 years, nine months and 13 days, he surpassed the previous record set by Gunter Reeg in 1985, with Eichhorn being 52 days younger than him while scoring in the competition, thereby making the record his own.
He had previously been on target in a 6-1 win over Kaiserslautern in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal back in December, which is his first official goal for the side.
