Borussia Dortmund's managing director Lars Ricken appeared upbeat of new signing Joey Veerman's ability to help the side.
The Dutchman completed a €21.5million transfer from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, just days after Dortmund gave up in their pursuit of Said El Mala.
Veerman successfully underwent his medical and was confirmed as the new signing on Tuesday, as the 27-year-old midfielder signed a five-year contract until June 2031.
Ricken, present at his presentation as the BVB chief, appeared confident that he will make a positive impact for them in a position he felt needed reinforcements.
"Joey is a player who will help us enormously with his abilities. This summer, we deliberately placed one focus of our transfer activity on central midfield, because since the start of the year we have let two players go from that area, Pascal Groß and Salih Özcan - and we are planning to use Emre Can in central defence after his return to the team."he told press on Tuesday
His words were echoed by sporting director Nils-Ole Book, who said Veerman brings "a great deal of creativity, technique and vision", qualitied that will help BVB level up in the new season.
He also highlighted his international experience:
"He has shown at PSV Eindhoven and with the Netherlands national team that he can consistently produce good performances at the highest level."
Coming through the ranks at Volendam, Veerman broke into the senior team in 2016 and three years later, moved to Heerenveen. His talents were then spotted by PSV Eindhoven, who bought him in 2022 and over the next four years, the Dutchman continued his development into one of the best midfielders in the top-flight.
Indeed, Veerman finished as the highest assist provider in the 2025-26 Dutch Eredivisie season with 14, his creative skills playing an instrumental role in helping the Farmers lift their 27th league title in the competition. He played a total of 197 games for PSV in all competitions and scored 31 goals while clinching eight titles in total, including two domestic cups and domestic Supercups each.
His arrival is a major boost for Borussia Dortmund, who desperately lacked an experienced personnel in the deep-lying midfield role. At 27, Veerman is in the prime of his career and brings plenty of top-flight experience and having broken onto the international stage too. He could be in line to make his club debut this week against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday, 22 August.
