Borussia Dortmund close out their 2025-26 Bundesliga season on Saturday with a visit to Werder Bremen as Niko Kovac's side aim to finish a solid campaign on a positive note.
With the Champions League and runners-up position both secured, the BVB are now looking to achieve their 73 points goal which will be the second-highest tally for a second-placed team in the competition.
Over the last few weeks, Dortmund have appeared sloppy and inconsistent as they've lost three of their last five top-flight matches. It also served to take away some of the gloss from their season, with the Black and Yellows losing only twice in 27 games before that.
Could there be one more surprise slip-up on the final matchday or is it going to be a stroll in the park for Dortmund? Well, they've seen both kind of results in the past.
Worst performances on last matchday
Dortmund 0-4 Hoffenheim (2020)
Borussia Dortmund were widely expected to secure a routine win here against a side languishing in seventh place, but Hoffenheim had the Europa League spot in sights and came to Signal Iduna Park high on spirits.
Andrej Kramaric had the game of his life that day, netting all four goals of his side's spectacular 4-0 victory as the BVB were listless and completely out of steam. Even having Erling Haaland upfront made little difference.
Dortmund 2-2 Mainz (2023)
Another home game, another disaster. But this one hurt way more than the one above as Dortmund let slip the Bundesliga title from their hands with the draw on a day when all they had to do was win the match.
Bayern Munich were two points behind them ahead of the final matchday. The BVB were expected to beat Mainz, a side languishing near the mid-table but they sprung a real surprise by racing to a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza.
Dortmund struck twice in the second half, including the equalizer through Niklas Sule deep in stoppage time, but the Bavarians won their game to race ahead on goal-difference and clinch the title right under Dortmund's nose.
Best performances on last matchdays
Dortmund 4-0 Darmstadt (2024)
What makes this game special is that it was Marco Reus' last Bundesliga game for Dortmund and it came in front of the Signal Iduna Park crowd. The departing skipper made sure he gave them something to cheer by getting on the scoresheet too.
Ian Maatsen had put them in front after 30 minutes before Reus doubled their advantage just eight minutes later. Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen added two more after the break to gloss over the scoreline to seal their 18th league win.
Dortmund 4-3 Werder Bremen (2017)
For the second year in a row, Dortmund met Werder Bremen on the final matchday and just like in 2016, the former prevailed. But this one was a more thrilling affair as the rivals played out a seven-goal thriller at the Westfalonstadion.
Zlatko Junuzovic put the River Islanders in front but Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck apiece to put the BVB in front before the break. Fin Bartels and Max Kruse netted apiece to restore Bremen's advantage in the second half as the visitors were heading towards a shock win.
But Reus and Aubameyang combined once again to score a penalty each and win it for Dortmund.
