Borussia Dortmund's Mathis Albert has become the youngest American ever to make his debut in the German Bundesliga after the youngster came off the bench against Freiburg on Sunday.

He's been on the bench on three occasions before but it was only yesterday when Albert was finally handed his senior debut by manager Niko Kovac.

The 16-year-old teenager replaced Maximilian Beier in the 89th minute to see off the match for the final few seconds as Dortmund were home and hosed by then, leading 4-0.

But more importantly, Albert now joins a growing list of Americans to have played for Dortmund as teenagers, with Christian Pulisic, Giovani Reyna and Cole Campbell all having done so previously.

Albert, though, is the youngest of them all, having now made his senior debut for Dortmund just a month before his 17th birthday. It also makes him the youngest American ever to play in the Bundesliga.

It wasn't the brightest debut, but the young gun looked promising nonetheless, completing two of his three attempted passes while also making one tackle towards the end of the game.

Born in South Carolina, Albert joined the Dortmund youth academy in 2024 at the age of 15 and played in their reserve team last year, making nine appearances.

He has also represented the United States at various youth levels and is currently gunning to make his senior debut for the Stars and Stripes too.

Other important stats from Dortmund's 4-0 drubbing of Freiburg:

Nine games unbeaten

Borussia Dortmund are now nine games without a loss against Freiburg in the Bundesliga. St. Pauli is the only team in the competition against whom they boast a longer unbeaten record (15).

During this period, the Black and Yellows have picked up eight wins. Had it not been for a draw earlier this season, then it would have been 10 wins in a row for them against the Braisgau-Brasilianer.

15 league goals

For the third Bundesliga season in a row, Serhou Guirassy has hit the 15-goal mark in the competition. The Guinean ace was on target against Freiburg, netting one in from close range after Julian Brandt picked him up with a looping cross.

Even though his goalscoring rate has declined compared to last season, his first at Dortmund, Guirassy's tally of 15 league goals highlight his importance in the squad. Bayern's Harry Kane is the only other player to have scored as many for the last three years running.

1000th home game, 600th win

On Sunday, Der BVB played their 1000th home game in the Bundesliga and by winning it, clocked their 600th victory in the competition too.
