While the players are away at the 2026 FIFA World Cup or enjoying their summer off, Borussia Dortmund continue to work behind the scenes.

The club is currently revamping its squad ahead of 2026-27 season with three new players added to the roster in Joane Gadou, Kaua Prates and Justin Lerma.

While a few more are expected to arrive in the coming months, the BVB is also in the process of sorting out futures of many existing players.

Dortmund set to renew Anton's contract

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly set to extend Waldemar Anton's contract after proving his value to the side once again in 2025-26 season during their title push.

The Uzbekistan-born centre-back emerged as their real defensive linchpin over Nico Schlotterbeck, delivering a series of flawless displays as Dortmund conceded the lowest number of goals in the Bundesliga.

Anton also clocked the second-most minutes in the squad, a testament to his importance in the XI. His tackling ability was second to none and always demonstrated exemplary vigilance to be at the right place at the right time for a vital intervention.

Unsurprisingly, the BVB want to retain such a reliable figure for the foreseeable future and have hence decided to renew his terms. According to German sports portal BILD, negotiations between the two parties are set to gather pace after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Anton is currently at with Germany's squad.

His current contract runs until June 2028 and the club is set to extend it further by another two years, which could hand the 29-year-old a lot of stability and a chance to develop into one of the world's best too.

Joining in from VfB Stuttgart in 2024, Anton has made the centre-back position his own. He's among the most reliable figures in defense and it has prompted the club to tie him down for a few more years.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Anton came off the bench in their resounding opening day win over Curacao but will be hoping to start against a more quality opposition in Ivory Coast.

Die Mannschaft are looking to become the latest side to reach the knockout stages of the competition, something they have failed to do so in the last two World Cups.

But after the big win on matchday one of the group stages, Julian Naglesmann's side are primed to reach the round of 32 by beating the Elephants.
