Borussia Dortmund's reserve goalkeeper Patrick Drewes is joyous at getting a chance to stand in goal during their pre-season games.
The 33-year-old German came off the bench in the second half of their loss to Fortuna Dusseldorf, having similarly been subbed in during their opening day win over RW Oberhausen.
Although he conceded twice at the Merkur Spiel-Arena, Drewes revealed at the contentment of finding regular gametime during the BVB's friendly games this summer.
Speaking to the press after the match, the 33-year-old goalkeeper said:
"“I don’t get to do this very often. Last year I only played one half in Siegen; now I’ve already played two halves. It’s fun and a great honor. Getting that feeling of getting back in and playing is also important to me. It’s frustrating that it turned out to be just one half like that.” "he was quoted saying on BVB's website
Drewes was among the 10 substitutes in the second half of their loss to Dusseldorf on Saturday, coming on in the 46th minute to replace Meyer when the score was still 1-0 in favor of Borussia Dortmund.
But he was beaten just three minutes into his appearance as Fabian Schleusener finished at the near post after a free-kick was flicked on in his path with a header.
In the 79th minute, Drewes was beaten again, this time by Anas Slimani after the Moroccan latched on to a looping pass inside the box from Lukas Eixler after he broke the offside trap to prance forward into the area unmarked.
Signed from VfL Bochum in 2025, Drewes is yet to play an official game for Borussia Dortmund. With first-choice keeper Gregor Kobel still to return to the fold after a memorable World Cup campaign with Switzerland, this is a good opportunity for the former to perhaps stake a claim within the side. But he isn't helping himself by conceding goals like this.
The goalkeeper later revealed that returning from a long summer break means players need some time to get back into their element, including the players from their youth side.
"“Everyone needs a little time, in their own way, to get used to what’s expected here. That goes for the players from the U19 team just as much as it does for the new signings. It was a mixed bunch during the first two weeks; now the national team players are gradually returning.”"said Drewes
