Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Friday as second place was officially sealed.
Contrary to the scoreline, the BVB actually fell behind very early on when Mahmoud Dahoud danced his way past three defenders to set up Can Uzun, who made it 1-0 for the visitors in the second minute.
Dortmund soon got their act together but an equalizer was hard to come by. Serhou Guirassy then made it 1-1 in the 42nd minute with a lovely finish before Nico Schlotterbeck put them ahead for the first time in the game.
Samuele Inacio then added a third to all but seal the tie, although Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back for the Eagles late on to set up an interesting finale.
Dortmund held out the remainder of the campaign to secure a win and the runners-up spot too, while Frankfurt's winless run extended to four games as their European ambitions were dealt a mortal blow.
1) Dortmund caught napping but resuscitate soon
In their last home game of the Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund fell behind just 78 seconds into the kick-off as Eintracht Frankfurt caught them off-guard.
Given their struggles in recent weeks, the BVB felt a sense of deja vu here as they possibly stared at another unfavorable result. But soon enough, the side regrouped and struck twice towards the end of the opening stanza.
The early goal only served to spurn them on, as the Black and Yellows became more diligent, showed more hunger and created the better chances. By half-time, they were 2-1 up.
2) Inacio opens his account for BVB
Samuele Inacio made his third consecutive start for Dortmund here. But this one was special, as the teenager opened his goalscoring account for the club too.
Operating behind Serhou Guirassy alongside Julian Brandt in a double pivot, Inacio was a menace all night. His first touches were promising and connected with his attacking cohorts devastatingly.
His best moment though, came in the second half when Inacio made an exquisite finish into the back of the net to effectively seal the tie. More to come from the young Italian dynamite in the future.
3) Second place secured
With that, Dortmund have officially secured the runners-up spot for the 2025-26 Bundesliga season. They have 70 points now, eight ahead of third-placed RB Leipzig who have two games in hand, but can't mathematically catch the BVB even if they win both.
It marks the club's highest finish since 2022-23 season, when the BVB infamously bottled the league title on the final day with a draw that allowed Bayern Munich to leapfrog them into first place and clinch the Miesterschale in dramatic fashion.
Although there was so such mayhem this time around, Dortmund can still be proud of achieving the silver medal following another long, drawn-out and challenging top-flight campaign.
