Germany national team coach Julian Naglesmann has hailed Felix Nmecha as a 'top player' after calling him up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup next month.
The former Bayern Munich manager announced his 26-man squad for the upcoming showpiece and it featured four BVB players, including Nmecha who is all set for his first major tournament with Die Mannschaft.
The 25-year-old just had a good season with Dortmund where he proved his quality with consistently top-notch displays as Naglesmann hailed Nmecha as someone with the potential to become one of the best in the world.
"“He’s a top player who brings everything needed to be one of the best midfielders in the world. He has so much talent, so much speed, so much dynamism.""said the Germany coach
Nmecha's season threatened to nosedive after he sustained a torn knee ligament in March that sidelined him for a month as his World Cup participation also plunged into uncertainty as he was forced to miss Germany's friendlies to Switzerland and Ghana.
But upon returning, he was handed a full 90 minutes by Kovac on the final day against Werder Bremen wherein the midfielder turned in an assured display with his immaculate passing and composure on the ball.
"“He is healthy, fit, has no problems, and will help us enormously to play a good tournament. Felix simply worked and trained well during his rehab phase. He rebuilt his muscles again, gained extreme stability in his knee – more than he actually had before.""added Naglesmann
Naglesmann further revealed that he was in attendance when Nmecha made his first appearance since recovering from the injury, on 9 May against Eintracht Frankfurt as he was given 16 minutes to play and admitted to getting impressed with his promising cameo on the day.
""In his 20-minute appearance, when I was at the stadium, his first action after nine weeks of injury was a turning move plus a 40-metre high-speed dribble. And I already said: ‘Okay, that works, he’s back.’. In the last game, he ran himself into the ground for 90 minutes. He did very well there as well.”"said Naglesmann
Nmecha has made only six appearances for Germany in his international career and played in just two of their qualifying fixtures, coming off the bench in their final two games. But Naglesmann is expected to give him some playing time in their upcoming warmup matches against Finland and the USA before kick-starting their World Cup campaign on 14 June.
