Borussia Dortmund are gearing up a summer of exodus with many of their first-team players possibly heading through the exit door. The latest name to have emerged from this saga is Yan Couto.
According to German news outlet BILD, both the player and the club are unhappy with the situation as Couto has spent much of the season on the bench.
He's started only 11 games in the Bundesliga this season, which is less than half the total number of matches played, while making another six appearances off the bench.
There have been 10 instances wherein the 23-year-old was a part of the matchday squad for league games but remained an unused substitute.
So reportedly, talks are ongoing between Cuoto and Dortmund to part ways prematurely and it could take shape really soon.
BILD further reports that Die Boruseen are refusing to guarantee him consistent gametime in the future in his preferred right-back role, not even in the event of Julian Ryerson's departure.
The Norwegian's stellar displays have limited Cuoto's chances this season with Ryerson bagging a staggering 15 assists in all competitions, including 12 in the Bundesliga.
Couto is seeking consistent gametime and that could prompt him to leave Dortmund this summer. After all, irregular appearances seems to have taken a toll on his international career too, with the right-back not receiving a call-up from Brazil after 2024 Copa America.
Dortmund made an outlay of €25 million for his services from Manchester City, including the loan fee as well as that for permanent transfer, which appears unlikely to recoup now.
Additionally, the club was paying him €5 million per year, an exorbitant price for a player who has played only 25 times this season, many of which were off the bench too.
Perhaps, parting ways could cut them some losses here and might as well help Dortmund in raising their budget for the summer transfer window.
As for Couto, he remains a valued figure in LaLiga as the Brazilian spent three years on loan at Girona where he truly made a name for himself.
His first spell at the club came in 2020-21 season, before returning for two more years in 2022 as Couto's promising displays caught Dortmund's attention.
However, the youngster may have to take a pay-cut wherever he goes next as BILD reports that his salary of €5 million could be too much for his potential suitors.
