Borussia Dortmund are historically known for their exhilarating and high-octane attacking style of play. It's a philosophy that has transcended managers although in more recent times, the club has sought to strike a more balanced approach by solidfying their defense too.
Last season, the BVB conceded the fewest number of goals in the Bundesliga and emerged as one of Europe's meanest teams. Although it still didn't yield them a title, Niko Kovac's side managed to give arch-rivals Bayern Munich a tough run for their money.
Among the key players in their resolute defense was Gregor Kobel, the uber-reliable custodian who then starred at the ongoing World Cup too. Joining from Stuttgart in 2021, the Swiss international has since garnered 216 appearances for the club, including 149 in the Bundesliga, which ranks him among their highest appearance-making goalkeepers.
But here are the top five:
5) Roman Burki
Before Gregor Kobel, there was another Swiss custodian carrying the mantle of a goalkeeper for Borussia Dortmund as Roman Burki was their first choice in goal from 2015 to 2022. During his seven-year spell at the club, he made 176 appearances in the league for them while keeping 60 clean sheets.
4) Wolfgang de Beer
Out of his 20-year-long club career, a good 15 were spent with Dortmund from 1986 to 2001 during which time Wolfang de Beer played 181 times in the top-flight for them while winning the 1994-95 and 1995-96 league titles too. He passed away in December 2024 at the age of 60.
3) Eike Immel
One of Bundesliga's 10 most capped players of all time, Eike Immel played 577 games in the German top-flight, almost half of which came with Borussia Dortmund (247). He began his career there in 1978 and played for eight years before moving on to join Stuttgart.
2) Stefan Klos
Another goalkeeping stalwart of the club, Stefan Klos too began his career with Dortmund. Debuting at 19, he quickly became a fixture in their lineup and plied his trade there for eight years. He made 339 appearances, including 254 in the Bundesliga and was part of the squad that won their first and only UEFA Champions League title in 1997.
1) Roman Weidenfeller
He needs no introduction. A modern-day Borussia Dortmund legend, Roman Weidenfeller was one of the stars of the Jugen Klopp-era that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2010 and 2011. But he was a mainstay much before it and long after too. Across his 16-year spell in the North-Rhine Westphalia, the German made 349 appearances for Die Borussen, making him the most-capped goalkeeper in their history.
