Gregor Kobel was the last Borussia Dortmund man standing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Julian Ryerson's Norway were beaten by England just hours earlier.

But now with Switzerland losing to Argentina, the light has gone out on the BVB's run at the tournament though Kobel made us proud with another heroic display.

Kobel beaten early on, but recovered thereafter

It took only 10 minutes for Argentina to steal a march over La Nati as Alexis Mac Allister headed in a perfectly-weighted corner from Lionel Messi for 1-0 with Kobel helpless in that moment to make a save.

But the Switzerland custodian recovered thereafter, making some vital saves including one stop on Messi to turn in another fabulous performance for his team. His best moment of the game though, came in the ninth minute of added time.

Lisandro Martinez broke into an acrobatic attempt that was certainly goal-bound, but Kobel stretched himself out to make a diving save and parry the shot away as the scoreline remain locked at 1-1 after 99 minutes.

Argentina capitalized on numerical advantage

Switzerland forward Breel Embolo was sent off in the 72nd minute for simulation, earning himself a second yellow card following a careful review by the referee, but La Nati managed to hold out Argentina for the last 25 minutes of normal time despite being a man down.

However in extra-time, the defending champions made it count. Julian Alvarez scored a wonderful strike from outside the box in the 112th minute that left Kobel with no chance, before Lautaro Martinez sealed the contest with a third goal. Kobel has closed down the angle for Thiago Almada, whose shot came off Kobel, but Martinez pounced on the loose ball to make a nonchalant finish in stoppage-time.

Borussia Dortmund fans would be proud of Kobel's World Cup campaign

Quite easily, Gregor Kobel was the best Borussia Dortmund player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goalkeeper turned in a series of talismanic displays to play an instrumental role in helping Switzerland reach their first quarter-final in the competition since 1954.

He made 20 saves at the World Cup, 16 of which came in the group stages alone while stopping a penalty kick in their shootout victory over Colombia too that earned him a Man of the Match award. Today against Argentina, Kobel was in an inspired form once again, giving Lionel Messi and co. a serious run for their money.
