Borussia Dortmund fans can breath a sigh of relief as the Gregor Kobel transfer rumors are gradually quashed. Kobel was directly asked about his future in Black and Yellow following Borussia Dortmund’s emphatic final match win against Holstein Keil, doing little to affirm his commitment:
"“I do not comment on such things at all. It was important to me that we were in the Champions League, because this club simply belongs in the Champions League. It is been a hell of a four years here. The Champions League final, almost champions, and this year it was a completely different season. It was definitely exciting, and you never got bored.""Gregor Kobel
While this quote does not speculate on his future, Kobel also does not state his intentions clearly, and therefore the media has run with it, focusing more on what Kobel didn’t say, than on what he did. It was later made known that this speculation irritated the Swiss shot-stopper, who has played a key role in BVB’s squad since his arrival four years ago.
Now, according to the tabloid Sport Bild, Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director, Sebastial Kehl has communicated that Gregor Kobel is not for sale this summer, and any transfer approaches are off the table. This also seems to be what the player and his camp wants as well.
Since Yan Sommer’s retirement from the Switzerland National Team, Gregor Kobel has become the first choice between the sticks for the Swiss. Kobel wants to maintain his status as the Swiss number one ahead of next summer’s World Cup, and to this, Kobel wishes to focus fully on his football at the Club World Cup and for Borussia Dortmund next season, without the distraction of transfer rumors.
Gregor Kobel has made 115 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions since his arrival from Stuttgart in 2021. Kobel has solidified himself as BVB’s number one keeper, and although his season was lackluster overall, his heroics late in the Bundesliga campaign helped the Black and Yellows secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.
