Borussia Dortmund ended their 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign with a routine 2-0 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday as Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto struck apiece in the second half.
With the runners-up spot already secured, the BVB were aiming to finish with 73 points and achieved just that on the back of a dominant show at the Weserstadion.
But contrast to the scoreline, the first half was rather frustrating for the Black and Yellows, who saw a handful of attempts saved by goalkeeper Mio Nagata.
Guirassy had two shots saved inside the opening 10 minutes of the clash, while the River Islanders had a goal ruled out following a VAR check in the 28th minute.
Despite their best efforts, Dortmund went into the break level with Bremen at 0-0 but their persistence paid off soon into the restart.
Julian Ryerson played in a free-kick while Guirassy was on hand to convert and break the deadlock. Couto came off the bench late on and consolidated their grip on the match in stoppage-time.
Dortmund finish with highest points tally since 2019
With 73 points locked in, Borussia Dortmund have achieved their highest tally in the Bundesliga since the 2018-19 season when the BVB finished with 76.
Although they finish a mammoth 16 points behind champions Bayern Munich, Niko Kovac's side can still be proud of a good season overall.
Guirassy must be retained
There have been rumors lately that Serhou Guirassy wants out of Dortmund this summer as the striker has been linked with a few European sides, including AC Milan.
But with a 17th league goal tonight, the Guinean international has proven his quality to the side once more and showed why the BVB must pull out all stops to retain him this summer.
No farewell for Sule
While Julian Brandt was subbed in after the hour mark for his last appearance in Dortmund colors, Niklas Sule remained an unused substitute in what's his last game as a professional.
The 30-year-old had announced a shock retirement from football last weekend and was set for one last game before hanging up his boots but didn't get any minutes tonight.
Salih Ozcan, who is leaving the club too, was also just a spectator tonight.
Best defense of Bundesliga
Dortmund finish the season with just 34 goals conceded in 34 games, that's an average of one goal per game. It's also the fewest of any team in the division, two fewer than even Bayern who conceded one more tonight.
The BVB have shipped 17 fewer than last season, which marks a significant improvement in their backline under Kovac's first full season in-charge. But hopefully, it also results in a Bundesliga title next season.
