Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva delivered for Borussia Dortmund yet again. The forwards combined to devastating effect in last night's Champions League win over Villarreal as the BVB won 3-2 at the Signal Iduna Park.
With the match tied at 1-1 after Renato Veiga's own goal for Dortmund was canceled out by Santiago Mourino, head coach Niko Kovac turned to his bench once more for inspiration, subbing in Jobe Bellingham and Fabio Silva.
While the former helped the side wrestle back control of midfield, it was Silva who made a direct impact at the other end. The Portuguese set his Guinean counterpart up with a fabulous cross inside the box for a tap-in as Dortmund led again.
It was the second time in four days that the two Dortmund forwards combined to create a goal, and a third time in the 2026 calendar year.
Both players not only appear in great form, but also seem to enjoy each other's company. After the match, Silva talked of his burgeoning attacking partnership with Guirassy:
"I play better when I play alongside him. We can create more space for each other. We create more chances and have a stronger presence in the penalty area."
Against Hoffenheim at the weekend too, the players combined to bring Dortmund level. Just minutes after Guirassy pulled one back for the BVB, he soon turned provider for Silva with a pass that the Portuguese carried forward before finishing the move with a confident, low-drive into the bottom corner.
The Guinean later revealed his happiness at playing alongside him:
"It’s not always easy for him. I’m very happy with Fabio. He’s made the difference in the last two games. I know him very well; we speak the same football language, and tonight we’re all happy."
After netting just thrice in 2025-26 season following his 22.5 million euro transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Silva has already equalled that tally this campaign. Although his three-game scoring streak ended against Villarreal last night, he opened his assist account for the season by teeing up Guirassy in the 80th minute.
Speaking of Guirassy, the striker has bagged four goals in four appearances this season. He drew a blank against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, but has been on target in both their Bundesliga games so far before last night's late double. (The 30-year-old didn't play in their DFB-Pokal first round clash against HEBC last Tuesday).
But he further emphasized that what's more important than who scores, is the collective effort from the team.
"In the last two games, it was all about team spirit. And we have to maintain that attitude. Players who come off the bench make the difference. That’s important for a big club. Let’s work toward achieving something great."
