"He is finished" - X reacts to Ramy Bensebaini's costly mistake for Algeria in AFCON qualifier

Borussia Dortmund and Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaini was in the line of fire for a costly blunder in their 2-2 draw with Burundi on Tuesday. The 31-year-old's poor clearance gifted the Swallows their second goal in the 12th minute as the Desert Warriors were in sixes and sevens at the back.

Having also looked shaky in their 3-1 win over Zambia last week, Algerian fans were frustrated with him for that error, although Bensebaini's performance improved after the break. It didn't stop a wave of backlash that it triggered online. Here are some of the reactions on X:

A fan page of Borussia Dortmund called it a 'horror' from the Algerian -

"#BVB | BENSEBAINI'S HORROR for BURUNDI's second!!!!!

Despite being 2-0 down, Algeria managed to equalize. [In progress]"

African football journalist Dean Ammi was clamoring for him to be dropped from the XI -

"We’re stuck with Bensebaini because Hemdani decided to make him captain.

I don’t know how many more mistakes this guy has to make to be dropped."

Another verified X user questioned Algeria for giving Bensebaini the captaincy -

"With a real coach and a real staff, Bensebaini wouldn't even last until halftime.
He was at fault for two goals conceded in 12 minutes.
And they gave him the captain's armband."

The sentiment was echoed by this X user, who tweeted -

"Bensebaini can’t even manage to run to try and prevent the throw-in.
It is baffling to play him for two full 90-minute matches—especially given that he just got married and has been out of action since the start of the season."

An Algerian football page promptly called the error 'unacceptable' -

"Bensebaini's defensive error on Burundi's second goal...UNACCEPTABLE ❌❌❌"

Another X user felt his shaky performance deserves to have the Algerian captain sent home -

"If your captain with ten years of international experience can't plug the gaps left by defensive lapses, you might as well start watching the AFCON from home.

Bensebaini is getting run ragged, and Burundi’s near-miss for a third goal really exposes him."

This user also questioned the idea of Bensebaini's leadership in the Algerian national team -

"So Bensebaini makes a blunder and we concede a goal against Burundi? And yet, I was assured he was a leader and had to stay in the national team!!"

One X user commented on Bensebaini being overweight too -

"Not only does Bensebaini not know how to defend...

But he also feels compelled to play long balls when we have possession in the opposition's half (missing 9 out of 10 cross-field passes).
