Nico Schlotterbeck just cannot catch a breath right now. Having only returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines through a torn ACL, the Borussia Dortmund centre-back was impressing with club and country. He took no time to return to his best and looked as solid as ever in all four matches he played for Dortmund and Germany over the last couple of weeks.
But now, the momentum he'd achieved with these appearances seems to have taken a hit with injuries potentially raring its ugly head on the star again.
Schlotterbeck suffers a knock in training
According to Sky Sports reporter Kerry Hau, the BVB defender cut his training short with the German national team. Upon examination by team doctors, it was found that his right foot is 'affected', indicating a knock. He further added that Schlotterbeck must now undergo an MRI scan.
To break it down for you, the player felt discomfort in his foot while training, which could be due to an injury. Further tests will reveal what exactly is the case with him and if he's going to be sidelined again.
Hau's tweet was also accompanied by a visual of Schlotterbeck grieving on the training pitch, with team doctors seeing tending to him soon after. The player was seen clutching his face in pain, which didn't look good and seems like it could be a big one again.
Back in June, Schlotterbeck suffered a torn ACL at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Germany, going off in their second group stage match against Ivory Coast early in the first half. He missed the remainder of their campaign.
The extent of his injury means the 26-year-old also missed the entirety of Dortmund's preseason run as well as their initial few matches of the 2026-27 season, including their opening two Bundesliga fixtures to Hamburger SV and Hoffenheim.
Schlotterbeck's wretched injury record
These aren't the only instances where Schlotterbeck has been injured. In fact, his career has been marred by injuries right since his days at Union Berlin. In 2020, he missed seven games for club and country with a torn muscle fibre followed by another 10 matches with a hamstring.
Since joining Die Borussen in 2022, the defender has missed another 37 matches in total for club and country, with his longest spell being a meniscus tear he suffered in April last year that kept him out of action for five months.
