Borussia Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel has lamented their Der Klassiker loss to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
The BVB went down 3-2 at the Signal Iduna Park as their title bid was dealt a mortal blow with the Bavarians going 11 points clear of them at the top of the league table.
With only 10 games remaining into the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign, it's unlikely to see Bayern slip-up such a big advantage despite juggling with domestic cup and European games too.
The loss was Dortmund's first at home in the Bundesliga this season and it also ended their 16-game unbeaten run in the competition, began after their earlier defeat to Bayern in October 2025.
Gregor Kobel, who conceded thrice in the match, expressed sorrow at the defeat while calling it painful. Speaking to the press after the game on Saturday, he said:
"“Today, they (Bayern) showed extreme quality in front of goal. We showed great fight. I think we gave it our all. We tried to get the fans behind us, to be physical, to make it difficult for them. We managed to do that for a long time, but in the end they are just very, very good in front of goal – that’s frustrating and incredibly painful.”"said the Swiss goalkeeper
Dortmund were in control of the first half, sitting back to choke up all passing lanes for Bayern and looking to hit them on the break, although it was another set-piece that their opener came from.
Much to everyone's surprise, the BVB lead 1-0 at the break and were supposedly on their way to causing an upset, but Bayern tore the script apart in the second half.
Kane made it 1-1 in the 54th minute before an ill-timed challenge from Schlotterbeck on Stanisic earned them a penalty which the Englishman converted.
There was more twist to come in the final 10 minutes of normal time as Daniel Svensson made it 2-2 to send the Westfalonstadion into a frenzy, but Kimmich cut the celebrations short with a crucial winner shortly after.
For the first time since the 2021-22 season, Bayern completed the league double over Dortmund, but more importantly, ended their title ambitions for good.
Having already been knocked out from the Champions League and DFB Pokal, Dortmund are now likely to finish the season trophyless. A real travesty considering the potential this side had shown this season.
