Jadon Sancho's career is at a crossroads again. His Manchester United contract expired on 30 June and has been a free agent ever since, with no club making any serious attempt to pursue him so far.

A return to Borussia Dortmund had been touted in recent times, but no talks have taken place yet. According to German news outlet BILD, there are certain conditions before any move comes to pass.

BVB contemplating on a unique contract

Jadon Sancho's £73 million transfer to Manchester United was an unmitigated disaster, with the England international failing to replicate his Borussia Dortmund heroics. None of his loan spells, including one at Dortmund in 2024, were able to reignite his best form.

Currently without a club and available as a free agent, the 26-year-old is open to a Dortmund return. Sancho is reportedly willing to accept a pay cut whereas Nils-Ole Book and Niko Kovac have both given the green signal to re-sign their former attacking midfielder.

However, there's a caveat: the club won't offer him a signing bonus and instead want him to accept a performance-related contract before any move is finalized. Dortmund would also offer him a maximum salary of five million euros.

Dortmund optimistic of Sancho finding his mojo

Ole Book has reportedly watched several Aston Villa games last season when Sancho was on a loan with the club and although he failed to impress, the BVB believes he could recapture his old mojo under Kovac's wings.

With Karim Adeyemi currently on his way to joining Barcelona, there would be a need for a new attacker and Dortmund could bring Sancho in his place. He might as well be a last-minute bargain should the Bundesliga giants be unable to find a better alternative without having to break their bank.

Sancho's record at Dortmund

After coming through the ranks at Manchester City's youth side, Jadon Sancho joined Borussia Dortmund in 2017 at just 17 years of age. Following some promising displaying during the 2017-18 season, he enjoyed a breakout year the following season and didn't look back, starring for the Black and Yellows as their creative linchpin.

Over a four-year spell, Sancho garnered 137 appearances and scored 50 goals while assisting 64 times too. His exploits helped Dortmund clinch the 2019 DFL-Supercup and the 2020-21 DFB-Pokal title although his second spell yielded just three goals and assists each in 21 games while also losing the 2024 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid.
