Borussia Dortmund's Joey Veerman is ecstatic about having made his official debut for the club on Sunday in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup loss to Bayern Munich.
The Dutchman came off the bench in the 63rd minute for Felix Nmecha for his first appearance in the fabled Black and Yellow since competing a transfer from PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
With the BVB having already wrapped up their preseason campaign by then, fans had to wait until Saturday to see Veerman in action.
He didn't disappoint though; the 27-year-old was strong in possession, got forward well and even laid two crosses although his BVB debut ended in a defeat and without a trophy to celebrate.
Speaking to the press after the game, Veerman revealed that he was happy after playing for the first time with his new side.
"It’s special to play for Dortmund. It was my first game, so I’m happy to be playing for this special club. "
Just nine minutes after he came on, Dortmund found a way back into the contest as Fabio Silva rounded off a lovely team-move in the 75th minute to make it 2-1.
Niko Kovac's side improved massively after the break, wrestling back the game's initiative from Bayern and asking question of their defense with more intensity and directness.
They even had a chance to restore parity at the death when Waldemar Anton picked out Maximilian Beier inside the box, but the forward blzed his shot over the bar from close-range.
Veerman felt Dortmund should have made it 2-2 there.
" We played well in the second half and should have tied the game in the final minute."
The defeat might have started their new campaign on a sour note, but Dortmund begin their league season next weekend followed by the DFB Pokal and Champions League next month.
As the club aims to compete more fiercely on all fronts this season with a new and exciting squad, Veerman is delighted to be a part of their endavors.
"We want to compete for titles this season. We want to do well in the Champions League and the Bundesliga, and I hope to be a part of that."
A midfielder by trade, Veerman arrived on the back of a solid record with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie. He bagged 197 caps in four-and-a-half years and contributed 98 goals (scoring 31 and teeing up 67).
Borussia Dortmund kick-off their 2026-27 Bundesliga campaign on Saturday, 29 August at home to Hamburg.
