Moukoko & Haller: What will be of the two for next season?

The duo will return from their respective loans, but will they have a future in or out of the Signal Iduna Park?

Youssoufa Moukoko and Sebastian Haller have their futures in doubt at Borussia Dortmund. Even with Niko Kovač transitioning to a back-three system and eventually playing more than one striker up front, it seems unlikely that both players will play at the Signal Iduna Park next season. As Moukoko and Haller will return from their loans to OGC Nice and FC Utrecht, respectively, they probably won't be wearing Black and Yellow (at least, from Dortmund).

According to recent news from Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund is actively looking for a backup option for Serhou Guirassy in the market. Moukoko and Haller could potentially be "cheaper alternatives" for Dortmund, as they still are under contract with the club. However, there is evidence that it is not an option for Sebastian Kehl and the board.

For instance, Berger confirmed that Youssoufa Moukoko, in particular, has no future at the club. The BVB academy graduate has been frustrated with his playing time at OGC Nice, which was exactly the reason he decided to leave BVB in a forced manner, with his agent releasing controversial statements on his client's future to the press. With only 816 minutes played this season and two goals, a contract expiring in 2026, and a poor relationship with the club, BVB could and should be looking to move on from their prodigal son. The club might even accept a lower fee.

Haller, on the other hand, has played way more (1801 minutes) and scored six goals. Still, the Frenchman is 30 years old and has a contract that also expires in June 2026. As Haller's time at Dortmund has been affected by his unfortunate illness, the circumstances indicate that it might be better for both sides to move on.

As reported by Patrick Berger, the Black and Yellows are looking for four different positions, at least, across the pitch to reinforce their squad for the 2025/2026 season, including a box-to-box midfielder, a number 10, a centre-back, and a back-up striker. For the striker role, Luighi from the Brazilian side Palmeiras is on the club's list, while Moukoko and Haller will most likely leave at the most convenient offer.
