Borussia Dortmund's former captain Marco Reus is excited to see his ex-head coach Jurgen Klopp take over Germany's national team.

He succeeds Julian Naglesmann, who stepped down following a disappointing last-32 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Without a managerial job since quitting Liverpool in 2024, Klopp had only taken up a management role at Red Bull, acting as their Head of Global Soccer since January 2025.

But earlier this month, he met with senior officials of the German football association in New York and an agreement to become the new coach of Die Mannschaft was reached.

Although Klopp hasn't signed any contract just yet, there's growing optimism around his appointment as Reus believes the former Borussia Dortmund manager is a great choice for the role.

Speaking to US media, he said (via Bundesliga's official website):

""I think Klopp is the perfect coach, whether it's for a club or a national team. He has the personality needed to lead any team, but when you talk about Germany, it's not just about the national team. I think if he takes the job, he'll change a lot of things.""

Reus spent three years under Jurgen Klopp after joining in 2012 and the pair enjoyed a productive spell at the club, winning two German Supercups and reaching the 2013 UEFA Champions League final too.

Klopp's pending appointment comes from successful rebuilding tasks throughout his club career. He guided Mainz 05 to their first ever promotion to Bundesliga back in 2004 before reinstating Dortmund as Germany's finest in the 2010s.

He then took over a Liverpool side teetering near mid-table mediocrity and turned them into a European force again, also clinching their first ever Premier League title that was preceded by their seventh Champions League crown too.

With such an esteemed record under his belt, Klopp is highly appealing to Germany, who have endured a dramatic fall from grace over the last couple of years. In fact, the four-time world champions have failed to reach the semi-finals of any major tournament since 2016.

During this period, they lost out in the group stages of consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments (2018 and 2022) while losing out in the first knockout round of the 2026 edition. At the Euros, they bowed out from the 2020 championship in the Round of 16 before a quarter-final exit in the next one.

Klopp's arrival would spark hopes of revival as Germany look to recapture their mojo again.
