Borussia Dortmund failed to reach the Champions League round of 16 for the first time since 2021-22 season as Atalanta beat them 4-1 on Wednesday to prevail 4-3 on aggregate in the knockout playoffs.

Lazar Samardzic struck a penalty deep in stoppage time after Ramy Bensebaini was penalized for hitting Nicola Krstovic on the head with his studs, sending Gli Orobici into the last-16 as Dortmund crashed out.

Coming into the fixture on the back of a 2-0 advantage from their first leg win, Niko Kovac's side were expected to advance but endured a monumental collapse at the Gewiss Stadium with their defense completely battered by a rampant Atalanta side.

Gianluca Scamacca sounded the early warning by firing the host in front after only five minutes into the kick-off while Davide Zappacosta doubled their advantage moments before the halftime whistle as the Serie A giants drew level on aggregate.

In the 57th minute, Mario Pasalic made it 3-0 as Dortmund trailed in the tie for the first time although substitute Karim Adeyemi netted a stunner a while later to draw them level on aggregate as the BVB saw a silver lining.

As the match came agonizingly close to extra-time, Atalanta won a penalty after Bensebaini's ill-timed challenge on Krstovic led to referee awarding the home side a penalty after careful review on the pitchside monitor.

Samardzic coolly slotted home from 12 yards to put the Bergamo outfit in front and snatch an aggregate victory at the death, capping off a dominant display to send Dortmund packing. Here are the player ratings for the Black and Yellows from a dismal performance:

Gregor Kobel - 4: A tough night for the Dortmund custodian, who was helpless for the first three goals and came up short during the penalty occasion

Emre Can - 5: The captain's return to XI couldn't inspire Dortmund as Can looked totally out of sync here

Waldemar Anton - 5: Made some excellent recoveries but poor positional awareness meant Atalanta gored at Dortmund's defense

Ramy Bensebaini - 6.5 Fought like a gladiator, winning 12 ground duels and four aerial duels while making five recoveries too, but eclipsed it all by conceding a late penalty that sent Atalanta through

Julian Ryerson - 6: Far from his creative best last night; got subbed off in the 70th minute

Jobe Bellingham - 6: Displayed his exemplary passing range but couldn't add anything more to Dortmund's game

Felix Nmecha - 5.5: Sloppy in possession and got beaten in his duels too

Daniel Svensson - 7: Created one big chance and laid five crosses to emerge as a bright spot in Dortmund's otherwise toothless vanguard

Maximilian Beier - 6.5: Had a bright chance to score but fired it against the woodwork

Julian Brandt - 6.5: Pulled the strings by carrying the ball forward on several occasions and asked questions of Atalanta's defense

Serhou Guirassy - 6: Missed a big chance to score as the Guinean international drew blank for the second game in a row

Substitutes

Carney Chukwuemeka - 7

Fabio Silva - 6.5

Yan Couto - 6

Karim Adeyemi - 7.5
