Needless to say, Borussia Dortmund has seen some incredible players come and other incredible players go. Some of those players went on to improve after leaving Dortmund but that fate was not met by everyone.

5 players who struggled after leaving Borussia Dortmund

With that being said, here are 5 players who struggled after leaving Borussia Dortmund...

1. Shinji Kagawa

Kagawa joined Borussia Dortmund initially as a youngster and spent two great seasons with the club. He was beginning to develop into a key player under Jurgen Klopp but ultimately, he left all this behind him to sign for Manchester United in 2012.

Manchester United were at the peak of their powers during this time, so it was no surprise that the Dortmund prodigy couldn't turn down these calls. Ultimately, though, the decision to join Manchester United was not his best move.

He played some great matches under Sir Alex Ferguson but he was not a sure-starter like he was with BVB. In two seasons, he managed just six Premier League goals, showing that perhaps the Premier League was not right for him.

In 2014, he made the right decision to re-join Borussia Dortmund. In hindsight, leaving Dortmund the first time around was not the best call by Kagawa as he struggled.
