Borussia Dortmund will make the trip to the Wanda Metropolitano to take on Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League tie on Wednesday.

It is crunch time in the UEFA Champions League, and Borussia Dortmund will be in quarterfinals action against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening. The first leg will take place in Spain, and both teams will be keen to lay down the marker in what promises to be a thoroughly captivating tie.

The Black and Yellows prepared for their trip to Atletico with a 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart this past weekend, which put an end to their five-game winning streak. Edin Terzic will hope to see more incisiveness from his side in the final third on Wednesday, after a number of chances went begging against Stuttgart.

We are unlikely to see any major changes to the Borussia Dortmund starting XI on Wednesday, although Sebastien Haller and Youssoufa Moukoko will both hope to play from the start due to Niclas Füllkrug's recent struggles. Ramy Bensebaini is expected to miss the rest of the season, while Donyell Malen is also set to miss out on2 Wednesday due to his thigh injury.

Atletico Madrid have been plagued by inconsistency in La Liga this season, but managed to knock out Italian Serie A champions-elect Inter Milan in the round of 16. Diego Simeone's side have plenty of know-how, experience and Champions League pedigree in their ranks. And they could well prove to be a tough nut to crack for the BVB attack.

Leading the way for Atletico Madrid in attack will be star forward Antoine Griezmann and top scorer Alvaro Morata. Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel is expected to start in the five-man defence, with Atletico captain Koke set to spearhead the midfield charge.

Thomas Lemar is dealing with an achilles tendon injury and will miss Wednesday's game for Atletico Madrid. Memphis Depay is also sidelined, while Mario Hermoso is a doubt.

The last time Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid faced off was back in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League group stage. Borussia Dortmund claimed a thumping 4-0 win at home, with Axel Witsel, Raphael Guerreiro and Jadon Sancho on the scoresheet. Atletico got a measure of revenge in the reverse fixture, winning 2-0.
