Borussia Dortmund are reportedly still in conversations with Manchester United over Jadon Sancho
The summer transfer window is often a time filled with twists and turns for clubs, both in terms of player incomings and outgoings. As we come closer to the end of the window, these transfer plot twists become far more common as clubs try to finalize their squads for the upcoming season.
In Borussia Dortmund’s case, the club is often very good at getting its transfer business done swiftly during the window and is not one to jump onto the “panic-buy” or “last-minute deal” bandwagons we see in the final days’ scramble to bring players in. New reports seem to want to suggest that this won’t be the case this time, with information from Fichajes stating that the club is still in contact with Manchester United over Jadon Sancho.
Sancho, as we know, was on loan with Dortmund for the second half of last season, and showed glimpses of the player that used to light up the Westfalenstadion before his move to the Premier League. It was reported very early on in the summer that Dortmund would try to sign Sancho permanently or extend the loan for another year with the goal of signing him next summer.
United’s valuation and asking price for Sancho seemed to stifle Dortmund’s attempts to secure a permanent homecoming for Jadon. Because of this, the player seemed very close to joining Paris Saint-Germain over the last couple of weeks.
There have been some shifts in recent days that could, if one were to entertain this train of thought, make the suggestion that the club could make a move a bit more likely. United seem to have changed their tune about Jadon’s price tag, with the club now seemingly asking for 40 million pounds. This is in contrast to the earlier quotes that stated they wanted upwards of 50 million for the player’s services, but of course, is still not cheap enough to be considered “affordable” for Dortmund.
There is also the “small matter” of Dortmund having to make a sale out on the wings before they bring in a new player. Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julien Duranville look set to compete out on the wing. If a player like Malen were to leave last minute, then it’s fair to say that Dortmund’s stance would have to change very quickly, but at this moment in time this doesn't seem very likely.
The other interesting bit in terms of Sancho’s possible departure seems to be that PSG has reportedly started to negotiate with Atalanta for the transfer of Ademola Lookman; a move that could put Sancho’s move to the Parc des Princes in jeopardy. There is also a reported possibility that Chelsea may make a bid for the player, but for anyone looking to jump-start their career, a move to Chelsea wouldn’t be the smartest of choices as things stand due to their over-bloated squad.
As things stand, the report in question doesn’t have very much to stand on in terms of possibility, but it does bring to mind a possible domino effect that may make a return for Sancho more plausible. Without such a domino effect coming to fruition, there is little substance behind such reports of a deal, even if Dortmund is still in loose communication with United regarding Sancho’s future.
