A 97th minute equaliser from Josip Stanišić prevented Borussia Dortmund from becoming the first team to defeat Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Borussia Dortmund must have thought that they did everything right to get the three points against Bayer Leverkusen. But the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions showcased their invincibility once again to preserve their unbeaten record. 1-1 it ended at the Westfalenstadion, with Josip Stanišić scoring in the seventh minute of added time to cancel out Niclas Füllkrug's opener.

There wasn't much to separate the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes, and a draw is a fair result in the end. But Borussia Dortmund will certainly feel disappointed, having missed out on the opportunity to turn their incredible week into a perfect one.

The Black and Yellows now find themselves two points behind RB Leipzig ahead of the two teams' meeting at the Red Bull Arena next weekend.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens returned to the starting XI in Borussia Dortmund's only change from Tuesday's game against Atletico Madrid. The talented winger joined compatriot Jadon Sancho and Niclas Füllkrug in the Borussia Dortmund attack. Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, made a string of changes following his side's Europa League excursions midweek.

There wasn't much in terms of attacking action in the first-half, with Bayer Leverkusen playing on the front foot and Borussia Dortmund content to let them have the majority of possession. Still it was the home side who came closest to scoring in the first 45, with Marcel Sabitzer forcing an excellent save from Lukas Hradecky.

The start of the second-half followed a similar theme, although Borussia Dortmund showed more desire to press high up the pitch. Nathan Tella nearly gave Bayer Leverkusen the lead, but Gregor Kobel dove to his right and made a fine save on the line.

Borussia Dortmund finally broke the deadlock in the 81st minute with Füllkrug volleying home from Sabitzer's cross. Tempers started to flare as we inched towards the full-time whistle, resulting in eight minutes of added time. And just as it looked like Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten was finally about to come to an end, Stanišić headed home from Florian Wirtz's corner to make it 1-1.

The result is a blow to Borussia Dortmund's hopes of finishing in the top four. But Edin Terzic will certainly take the result, especially with the Bundesliga now likely to get five spots in next season's Champions League. BVB will next be in action against RB Leipzig away from home, and the result of that game could well decide which team takes fourth place.
