Borussia Dortmund shocked the world as they reached the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League but in truth, the Bundesliga club have every possibility of reaching the final and winning the competition. All it takes is two more wins, which this incredible team with a rich winning mentality are capable of producing.

Already thinking ahead to the new season, Edin Terzic and the BVB hierarchy will be thinking about their best transfer strategy ahead of the summer transfer window. There are obvious positions which they must strengthen in but one decision which must be made is whether they will sign their current loanees permanently.

Amongst the list of players on loan at BVB, one player has stuck out above all else, in the best possible way. That player is Ian Maatsen, who was given a new lease of life when he signed from Chelsea on loan in the January transfer window.

In a short period of time, Maatsen has made an incredible impact at Dortmund and in terms of form, he is one of the best full-backs in the world currently. However, Dortmund have been given a steep price should they wish to make his current deal permanent in the summer.

Borussia Dortmund must break their transfer record to sign Chelsea superstar

According to a recent claim by English outlet The Mirror, Borussia Dortmund will need to break their current transfer record to sign Ian Maatsen. It is believed that Chelsea will "put their foot down" over Ian Maatsen, which means Dortmund must pay £35m to sign him, which is his new relase clause.

For context, Borussia Dortmund have only paid over £30m once and that was to sign their club record signing, Ousmane Dembele. Therefore, it would be a big jump for them to sign Ian Maatsen and make them their club record signing.

In my opinion, though, this is a no-brainer as far as Borussia Dortmund are concerned. Unlike Dembele, Maatsen already boasts Bundesliga experience and he's proven he is capable of providing the goods at the highest level. He even scored an important goal in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, showing he is capable of playing at the level.

From Chelsea's perspective, their financial situation is in the ruins. This is well-documented, given their relentless spending in the past few seasons with no success. Therefore, it is understandable they are trying to squeeze every possible penny out of their sales.
