Borussia Dortmund's hopes boosted as Bundesliga all but guaranteed five Champions League spots next season
Borussia Dortmund's chances of playing UEFA Champions League football next season have been boosted, with the Bundesliga all but guaranteed an extra spot in the competition.
The UEFA Champions League is set for a revamp next season, with a total of 36 teams set to take part in the competition. The top two leagues in the European Performance Spots will each be rewarded with an extra spot in the Champions League next season. Performances by clubs in European competitions go towards the coefficients of the respective associations.
One of the two spots has already been secured by the Serie A, and the Italian league will now have five representatives in the UEFA Champions League next season. Germany holds a commanding lead in second place, ahead of England and France.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are both still in contention in the UEFA Champions League, while Bayer Leverkusen have made it to the Europa League semifinals. Aston Villa are the only English Premier League team still competing in European football, while Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille are the two representatives from France.
For the Bundesliga to secure an extra spot in next season's UEFA Champions League even if teams from England and France win all their remaining games, the German teams left in European competitions this season need to clinch two more wins (or one win and two draws, or one win one draw and progress to the next round).
Borussia Dortmund are currently fifth in the Bundesliga standings, and have been jostling with RB Leipzig for fourth place in recent weeks. Sixth placed Eintracht Frankfurt are 14 points behind the Black and Yellows with just five games left to play this season.
With the Bundesliga now in all likelihood getting an extra spot in next season's Champions League, Edin Terzic's side can put their main focus on the semifinal tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
If Borussia Dortmund end up winning the UEFA Champions League this season, then the Bundesliga would have six representatives in Europe's premier club competition next season.
