Borussia Dortmund continue to be linked with Porto's Alan Varela
With April now in full swing, the Bundesliga season is inching ever closer to coming to a conclusion. This means that clubs will be looking to finalize their plan of action for the summer transfer market. According to reports, Borussia Dortmund's plan for transfers is looking rather expensive.
Dortmund have quite a few names on their list that they think will make strong additions to their squad for the following season. These names include familiar faces such as current loan signing Jadon Sancho and VFB Stuttgart's Chris Führich, who himself used to play for Dortmund's youth ranks. Then theres also the likes of Dean Huijsen, a young center back with immense talent currently plying his trade for Roma (on loan).
The most curoius of Dortmund's current targets however is Argentine midfielder Alan Varela who currently plays for Porto. The former Boca Juniors midfielder has impressed immensely for the Portugese outfit, having become a cornerstone in their midfield. As previously discussed, the player has been lauded for his aggression, passing range and tenancity on the pitch.
Dortmund's interest remains curious as Varela has a 70 million euro release clause that realistically far exceeds what Dortmund would be able and willing to play for a singular player. Of course, the club, if truly interested, could be looking to negotiuate a lower feel for the player, as his current market value sits at 25 million euros, but that in itself could be a challenge due to interest from PSG and Liverpool, who could simply pay the release clause if they saw fit.
What is clear however is that Dortmund certainly need to adjust their current midfield options as both Emre Can and Salih Özcan have underperformed. Even with the influx of funds that their deep Champions League run, finsihing top four, and qualifying for the Club World Cup may bring, Dortmund may have to look for alternative options to reinforce defensive midfield, especially if Porto are unwilling to negotiate a significantly lower fee for their burgeoning midfield star. Dortmund have also recently been linked to PSV's Jerdy Schouten, but once again it remains to be seen what direction they truly decide to go with this upcoming rebuild.
