Borussia Dortmund internationals: The Netherlands defeat Turkiye; Switzerland also eliminated
By Tushar Bahl
Gregor Kobel and Salih Özcan both faced elimination from Euro 2024 on Saturday, as Donyell Malen and the Netherlands booked a semifinal clash against England.
Just four teams remain in Euro 2024 contention, and two mouthwatering semifinals have now been set up. France and Spain are set to square off in the first semifinal, and England and the Netherlands will go head to head in the other last four clash. England defeated Switzerland on penalties, with former Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji missing his spot-kick.
Former Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach winger Breel Embolo had earlier given Switzerland the lead in the 75th minute, only for Bukayo Saka to equalise five minutes later. The game was decided by a penalty shootout, with England coming out on top 5-3.
Gregor Kobel was an unused substitute once again for Switzerland, with Yann Sommer getting the nod to start ahead of the Borussia Dortmund vice-captain.
In the other quarterfinal on Saturday, Salih Özcan played from the start for Turkiye but wasn’t able to prevent them from suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
Turkiye took a shock lead in the first-half, with Samet Akaydin heading home after the Netherlands failed to clear their lines from a corner. They came close to adding to their lead on a few occasions, but a fantastic six-minute spell helped the Netherlands turn the game on its head.
Stefan de Vrij headed home the equaliser in the 70th minute, before an own goal from Mert Müldür helped secured the win for the Netherlands.
Donyell Malen was an unused substitute for the Netherlands on Saturday, but will hope to feature in the semifinal against England as he looks to add to his two goals at Euro 2024.
