Mats Hummels has left Borussia Dortmund, after leaving behind an incredible legacy. It was the unfortunate UEFA Champions League final, where Mats Hummels was one of the best players on the pitch, when he played his final BVB match. It would have been a dream-come-true for him to leave with the Champions League but beating Real Madrid wasn't to be his fate.
So, what next for Mats Hummels? Needless to say, Borussia Dortmund fans wish nothing but prosperity for the club legend.
Having spent his entire career in the Bundesliga, it remains to be seen whether he can face playing for another German club, since his heart appears to be with BVB and BVB only. There would be no hard feelings if Hummels remains in the Bundesliga, of course.

At this point in time, there is an attractive proposition from the Serie A. According to a report from Calcio Mercato, Roma have become interested in bringing Mats Hummels to the Italian top flight. It comes as no surprise that Roma would like a leader in their defence, with Hummels presenting a golden opportunity to them.
Legendary player and Roma head coach Daniele De Rossi is a big fan of Mats Hummels and would like for him to lead the reigns in defence going forward. It is stated within the report (translated from Italian to English) that Mats Hummels' requested salary "does not seem to be an insurmountable obstacle".
Italy has been home to some incredible defenders in the past. Similar to the German football philosophy, the European country has placed a particular emphasis on the past in impossible-to-defeat low blocks. While this has been a zonal phenmona, it has relied on individual personalities such as Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini to implement.
While being careful not to compare Mats Hummels to the likes of Cannavaro or Maldini, he certainly possesses a similar mentality. That mentality being defend or die defending.
As it was demonstrated in the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels is eagerly prepared to put his body on the line to prevent a goal.
Honing his craft in Germany throughout his career, it will be no surprise to see Hummels make a name for Italy towards the end of his legacy. It remains to be seen whether the proposition attracts him, though.
