Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is proving that his signing was a massive coup for the club
Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has had a couple performances to remember is recent days, with the English-born winger playing a crucial role in Dortmund's victories over both Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga and AC Milan in the Champions League. Against Gladbach, JBG put on a real masterclass to help Dortmund come back from 2-0 down, contributing with a goal and an asssit. Against Milan, the young English starlet added an all important Champions League goal to his tally for the season.
Bynoe-Gittens' performances don't come as that much of a surprise for those that have watched Dortmund so far this season. When given the time to play, JBG has been one of Dortmund's more inventive players on the pitch. He constantly tries to take on his opponents and dribble his way towards goal, something his teammates are happy to let him do. Dortmund and Germany striker Niclas Füllkrug said it best when he heaped praise on JBG after the game against Milan:
"We know when he gets the ball and has a one-on-one that we don't need to offer him support. We let him play his game and create space for him. It's worth its weight in gold to have a player like him in the team. We're happy about that and hope that he continues like this."
- Niclas Füllkrug
Füllkrug's words hit home a point that Dortmund have struggled with this season, namely that the squad, as it's been constructed in many games by head coach Edin Terzić, has lacked the sort of player JBG embodies: a fluid, brave and inventive creator that can really put opposition team's on edge. We saw glimpses of this earlier this season, paricularly in Dortmund's DFB Pokal clash asgainst Hoffenheim, but in his last two game, JBG has stepped his game up significantly.
According to BILD, Borussia Dortmund only paid Manchester City a 90,000 euro training compensation fee for Bynoe-Gittens in 2020; a deal that seems to be getting better and better by the day for Die Schwarzgelben. if his development trajectory continues in this vein, there's no telling just how high his value could end up reaching.
For Dortmund and Bynoe- Gittens however, this should be a secondary concern for the time being. The Young English winger recently singed a contract extension with the Ruhr club until 2028, which means that the club and player see a consistent future with each other. One can only hope that JBG's development continues to unravel in a positive manner, and that the future the club and player envision together is a bright one.
