The Bundesliga returned with a bang this weekend, and fans were treated to plenty of drama, late thrills, chaos, and lots of goals.

Reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen picked up right where they had left off last season, as a dramatic goal from Florian Wirtz in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time helped them defeat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-2 on Friday evening.

Bayern Munich were also 3-2 winners in Vincent Kompany's first game in charge. They came from behind to defeat VfL Wolfsburg, with Serge Gnabry scoring a dramatic late winner.

Bundesliga table after matchday one: SC Freiburg on top, Borussia Dortmund second

Borussia Dortmund began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. A second-half brace from Jamie Gittens helped Nuri Sahin's side get the three points.

SC Freiburg find themselves at the top of the Bundesliga standings after matchday one. They came from behind to stun VfB Stuttgart 3-1 thanks to goals from Lukas Kübler (x2) and Ritsu Dōan.

Newly promoted FC St. Pauli were soundly beaten by Heidenheim on Sunday, with Bayern loanee Paul Wanner on the scoresheet.

New signing Antonio Nusa rescued a narrow win for 10-man RB Leipzig against VfL Bochum. Andrej Kramarić's hat-trick trumped the spirited Holstein Kiel, as Hoffenheim began their season with a 3-2 win.

FC Augsburg and Werder Bremen shared the spoils 2-2 in a thrilling encounter. Justin Njinmah rescued a point for Bremen in the 58th minute after the Bavarians had turned things around in the first-half.

László Bénes helped Union Berlin earn a 1-1 draw against Mainz 05, canceling out Nadiem Amiri's opening goal.
