Could Borussia Dortmund join race to sign former Manchester United player?
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are said to be one of the clubs interested in signing Angel Gomes, who recently made his debut for the England national team.
Angel Gomes came through the youth team ranks at Manchester United, but decided to leave the club for LOSC Lille in 2020 after being left frustrated by a lack of first-team football. The 24 year old has established himself as a well-rounded midfielder at Lille, capable of playing in the number six and number eight roles. He was recently rewarded for his performances with a maiden call-up to the England senior team.
Angel Gomes will be out of contract at the end of the season
With Gomes' current contract set to expire at the end of the season, a number of clubs are already in the race for his signature. According to the Sun, Borussia Dortmund also hold an interest in signing the midfielder. Newcastle United are said to be leading the race for Gomes, while Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool are also interested.
Midfield, especially the number six role, has been an area of concern for Borussia Dortmund over the past 12 months. But it is currently uncertain just how serious BVB's interest is in signing Gomes. The Black and Yellows already have Emre Can as their first-choice defensive midfielder and club captain, while Pascal Groß also joined the club this past summer.
Marcel Sabitzer, Felix Nmecha, Julian Brandt, Kjell Wätjen, and Gio Reyna are the midfield options available to Nuri Sahin.
Angel Gomes earned plenty of plaudits for his performances for the England senior team during the recently concluded international break. And his future will certainly be a big talking point in the coming months. Whether Borussia Dortmund will look to make a move for him next summer remains to be seen.
