One of the most exciting signings Borussia Dortmund have managed to finalise this window is the acquisition of Pascal Groß. The 33 year-old arrives from Brighton on a cut-price fee and has signed a contract until June 2026. Despite his age, the Germany international is set to play a key role at BVB this season.

Groß brings versatility and maturity to the squad, and also control in the middle of the park. With his experience, he is also expected to be one of the leaders of the side.

The midfielder made 228 Premier League appearances for Brighton. He contributed 30 goals and 45 assists during that time. He was also part of Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad at Euro 2024 on the back of his stellar campaign last season that saw him register five goals and 13 assists for Brighton.

What will Pascal Groß offer to BVB?

With the departure of club legends Mats Hummels and Marco Reus, having such a matured leader in the squad is a big bonus for Nuri Sahin. If the club is to challenge for the league title this season, solely relying on young talents won’t be enough. In this regard Pascal Groß will offer so much to the team.

As a versatile midfielder who can also be deployed as a full-back, Groß will offer Sahin tactical flexibility and room to tinker. We have already seen the understanding he has managed to form with Julian Brandt and Emre Can in midfield.

The fact that Groß can also be used as a defensive midfielder is a welcome sight for BVB. Can has underwhelmed in this role and the club has been looking for a suitable replacement without much success. Groß might just be the right answer.

Groß is not only a supremely talented and highly skilled player, but he is also a childhood BVB fan. “Signing for this club is a huge deal for me, as I’ve been a Dortmund fan since I was a kid. I’ll try to repay the club’s faith in me by playing my game, and I can’t wait to play alongside my new teammates in front of the BVB fans at the Signal Iduna Park and to work hard with everyone here to achieve our ambitious goals,” he stated during his official unveiling. For a club that is so emotionally attached to its players, Groß should quickly become a favourite among the supporters.

The expectations for Pascal Groß are high. But it is important to remember that he is not getting any younger. Managing his minutes and using him efficiently will be the key to unlocking his full potential. Groß only needed three minutes to get his first assist in BVB colours (against Phönix Lübeck in the DFB-Pokal). He will now have his sights set on making a similar impact in the Bundesliga.
