Edin Terzić: Borussia Dortmund have "great respect" for PSV Eindhoven
After a drab 1-1 draw in the Bundesliga with VFL Wolfsburg over this past weekend, Borussia Dortmund are looking ahead to what's set to be a very interesting encounter with PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. In the press conference ahead of the game, Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić showed his respect to Dortmund's Dutch opponents, praising their current form:
"We have great respect for Eindhoven. They are doing exceptionally well, they are fast and strong in dribbling. They have good ideas, good players, and a lot of confidence."
- Edin Terzić
Up until the game against Wolfsburg, Dortmund were considered to be one of the Bundesliga's in form sides, having avoided losing a single game post the winter break, but blips against both Wolfsburg and Heidenheim have marred this unbeaten run with draws that could have ended up as wins for the teams they've faced. In Wolfsburg in particular, Dortmund seemingly did everything they could to allow Wolfsburg to get the equalizer, folding to the pressure Niko Kovač's side exerted on them in transition. This will certainly be a concern considering Dortmund will be facing a very attack oriented PSV side who sit 10 points atop the Dutch Eredivisie, (20 wins, 2 draws, no losses).
Despite this, Terzić seemed rather optimistic during the press conference, noting that the team simply needs a "complete game of football" on Tuesday:
"I am generally optimistic, especially when we have the ball. We need possession and counter-attacking football. In Germany, we are among the top teams in terms of possession. At the same time, we are also the best team when it comes to scoring on counterattacks. We need a complete game of football."
- Edin Terzić
Terzić's optmisim is not unwarranted, especially in the Champions League where we've seen Dortmund put in some of their best performances this season. In many ways, Dortmund topping a group with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Newcastle is an immense achievement and speaks to the team's strength in the competition. The team is also coming into the match with a relatively deep squad and far less injuries than the club had to navigate in the first half of the season, which should all culminate into a net positive.
At the end of the day, the match is going to come down to what Dortmund shows up to the game; The side we've seen control games in the Champions League, or the side that struggles in the Bundesliga. It will also come down to how Terzić chooses to line his squad up, and whether he chooses to use the options he has on the bench adequately.
What we can be sure of however is that this game will be an entertaining spectacle as a whole. There are so many intersecting storylines with the likes of Peter Bosz (former Dortmund head coach) and Donyell Malen ( former PSV star) that will take center stage as both teams look to secure their place in the next round of Europe's premier club competition.
