Edin Terzic was left frustrated with how easily Borussia Dortmund were outplayed by Mainz 05 during their 3-0 defeat on Saturday evening.

Borussia Dortmund's lack of consistency was on display once again as they followed up their incredible 1-0 win over PSG in the Champions League semifinals with an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Mainz 05.

Granted, there were ten changes to the starting XI as Edin Terzic rotated his side after their Champions League excursions. But the Black and Yellows were inexplicably outplayed by a relegation threatened side that simply wanted it more.

The 05ers raced to a 3-0 lead in the first-half, with Leandro Barreiro opening the scoring and Jae-sung Lee netting a brace.

Terzic lamented Borussia Dortmund's failure to find any consistency in the Bundesliga this season, and also took responsibility for the heavy defeat to Mainz. The 41 year old told Sky Sport, "We set the team up in a similar way [to the game against Augsburg last weekend], had a similar formation and it was a similar game. Only this time we were the team that was always late to react, that was outplayed in the duels. That's why it was a deserved defeat."

"They punished our mistakes in the early stages with ice-cold precision. It was a very disappointing evening for us. Unfortunately, that's the kind of performance we've shown far too often in the Bundesliga this season."

"We wanted to freshen things up, we wanted to create chances - and none of that worked. Of course I take responsibility for that. That's why I'm not happy with myself."

Following their heavy defeat to Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund are now guaranteed to finish fifth in the Bundesliga. They will now hope to end their Bundesliga campaign on a high next weekend when they take on the already relegated SV Darmstadt in what will also be their final home game of the season.
