Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic was full of praise of Mats Hummels following his man of the match performance against AC Milan on Tuesday.

Mats Hummels rolled back the years once again on Tuesday evening as he put in an excellent defensive shift during Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 win over AC Milan. The veteran centre-back led the BVB defence brilliantly, winning most of his duels and making several vital recoveries to stop AC Milan in their tracks.

It was an old-school defensive display from Hummels, and Edin Terzic compared the performance to that of Jürgen Kohler during Borussia Dortmund's UEFA Champions League semifinal against Manchester United in 1997. During his press conference following BVB's 3-1 win over AC Milan, Terzic said:

"He is someone who has seen and experienced everything in football. He played an incredible game [against Milan]. There are no doubt some people who can remember Jürgen Kohler's game in Manchester [in the 1997 Champions League semifinal]. He was then proclaimed a football god. I don't think Kohler's performance back then was much better than Mats Hummels' performance [against Milan]."

Many believed that Mats Hummels would be limited to a bit-part role at Borussia Dortmund this season. But the 34 year old has cemented himself as an important player for the Black and Yellows and has showcased his exceptional defensive skills, especially in big matches.

Hummels' strong defensive performances have been crucial to Borsusia Dortmund's turnaround in fortunes in the UEFA Champions League. It still remains to be seen what the future holds for the centre-back beyond the end of the season. But if he keeps playing like this, there is no doubt that the BVB bosses will look to extend his contract.
