Julian Nagelsmann has called up Emre Can to the Germany squad for the European Championship following the withdrawal of Aleksandar Pavlović.
Emre Can has been nominated to the Germany squad for Euro 2024 as a late replacement for Aleksandar Pavlović, who was forced to pull out of the squad due to illness. The Borussia Dortmund captain will link up with his Germany teammates ahead of their European Championship opener against Scotland on Friday.
The decision to name Can in the squad comes as a bit of a surprise following his struggles at Borussia Dortmund this season. But Julian Nagelsmann said that he wanted to call up another defensive midfielder following Pavlović's withdrawal, and Can was eager to step up and join the team.
"We wanted another number six in the squad and have therefore decided to call up Emre Can. He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team. We wanted another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and knows how to deal with the pressure. He fits the profile we need right now."
Can becomes the third Borussia Dortmund player in the Germany squad for Euro 2024, joining Niclas Füllkrug and Nico Schlotterbeck. He will likely be behind the likes of Toni Kroos, İlkay Gündoğan, Robert Andrich, and Pascal Groẞ in the pecking order for midfielders.
Germany will get their Euro 2024 campaign underway against Scotland, and will also face Hungary and Switzerland during the group stage. They will be eager to win a record fourth European Championship title as they host the tournament this summer.
