Former Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels has completed his move to AS Roma, joining the Italian side on a one-year contract.

After months of speculation, the future of Mats Hummels has finally been resolved with the centre-back joining AS Roma on a free transfer. The veteran centre-back was a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund when his contract expired at the end of last season.

Several clubs were linked with a move for Hummels this summer, including the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion, Bologna, Real Sociedad, and West Ham United. But he has now decided to join Italian Serie A side AS Roma.

Having spent his entire playing career in the German Bundesliga, the 35 year old heads to Italy for a new challenge. Hummels played a total of 508 games for Borussia Dortmund, and is the club's second highest appearance maker of all time.

Mats Hummels is without a doubt one of the greatest players to ever play for Borussia Dortmund. The 2014 FIFA World Cup will now hope to cap off his exemplary playing career with a memorable season in Italy with AS Roma.

It has been a difficult start to the season for Daniele De Rossi's side, who have drawn two and lost one of their opening three games in the Italian Serie A.
