Gregor Kobel believes that Borussia Dortmund can be proud of their UEFA Champions League campaign despite the disappointment of losing the final to Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund's dream run in the UEFA Champions League came to an end on Saturday evening as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid. Edin Terzic's side delivered an impressive performance and were unlucky not to score before they were caught by Real Madrid's late sucker punches.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Jr. helped Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League title for a record 15th time, and Borussia Dortmund were left to rue their missed opportunities.

For Gregor Kobel, the disappointment is huge after the heartbreak of the Champions League final. But the Borussia Dortmund vice-captain is also proud of the way they have played in the competition this season. "After such an opportunity, the disappointment is naturally huge," Kobel told ZDF.

"I think we've played an outstanding Champions League campaign, we've shown that we can play at the top level on the international stage and I hope that every single one of us is extremely proud, takes a lot away from it and also has this self-confidence - that everyone knows we can hold our own at the highest level."

Kobel had another excellent game in goal for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. After being a spectator for the majority of the opening 70 minutes, the Switzerland international made three outstanding saves to prevent Real Madrid from doubling their lead before Vinícius Jr. pounced on a cheap giveaway and sealed the win.

The 26 year old will now turn his attentions to the European Championship, where Switzerland will go up against Hungary, Scotland and Germany.
