Hans-Joachim Watzke laments Borussia Dortmund's failure to make the most of their chances in Champions League final

Hans-Joachim Watzke felt that Borussia Dortmund showed a good account of themselves in the Champions League final, but bemoaned their failure to make the most of their chances against Real Madrid.
Making their first Champions League final appearance since 2013, Borussia Dortmund looked very much at home on the big stage at Wembley Stadium. The Black and Yellows were the better team from the get go, and had a number of chances to take the lead in the first-half. But failure to make the most of those chances cost them in the end, as Real Madrid scored twice late on to win the final.
It was a sobering evening for Borussia Dortmund, who had overcome all odds to reach the Champions League final but fell at the final hurdle against a team with incredible experience and know-how.
Hans-Joachim Watzke felt that Borussia Dortmund were the better team for much of the game, yet couldn't help but feel disappointed that they failed to convert their chances into goals. "We played very well and should have taken the lead in the first-half. Then it would have been a different game. We got a bit tired after 65 minutes and Real capitalised on that," the outgoing BVB managing director told ZDF.
"I was already slightly skeptical at the half-time break because we did not convert the great advantage that we had into a goal. But you can't fault the team. We showed a good account of ourselves. When you're in the final, dominate the game and have these chances, but Real Madrid win in the end, as they almost always do, it's a bit disappointing."
Borussia Dortmund will now hope to learn from this experience and bounce back in all competitions next season. A key summer lies in store for BVB, as they look to usher in a new era.
