Borussia Dortmund have a new vice-captain in place, with Julian Brandt replacing Gregor Kobel in the role of Emre Can's deputy.
Nuri Sahin has revealed the look of Borussia Dortmund's leadership council going into the new season. Emre Can will stay on as BVB captain despite reports claiming that his role in the team could be at risk. Meanwhile, Julian Brandt has been appointed as the club's new vice-captain by Sahin.
The attacking midfielder, who has been at Borussia Dortmund since 2019, takes over the role from Gregor Kobel. But the goalkeeper is still part of the extended leadership council, which now also features Marcel Sabitzer.
Nico Schlotterbeck has been named Borussia Dortmund's new third captain. He replaces Niklas Süle in the role, having established himself as a vital part of the team since his move from SC Freiburg in 2022.
Sahin explained the decision to remove Kobel as vice-captain following Borussia Dortmund's pre-season friendly against Villarreal, and hailed him as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. "I told him that I wanted to have a connection on the pitch with an outfield player. And Greg took it very professionally and said that he was fully on board and fully supported me. We're talking about one of the best goalkeepers in the world. His position with us is so highly regarded, it could hardly be higher."
It has been a summer of big change for Borussia Dortmund, with two key leaders of the dressing room in Marco Reus and Mats Hummels leaving the club.
