An inspired performance from Karim Adeyemi in the first-half helped Borussia Dortmund claim a 4-2 win over Heidenheim on Friday evening.
An electric first-half helped Borussia Dortmund defeat Bundesliga high-flyers Heidenheim and maintain their unbeaten start to the season in the process. Led by the in-form Karim Adeyemi, the Black and Yellows got the better of Heidenheim at the Westfalenstadion.
Nuri Sahin decided to ring in the changes to his starting XI, with Adeyemi, Donyell Malen, and Felix Nmecha all coming into the team. Serhou Guirassy also played from the start and led the attack on his Borussia Dortmund debut.
Karim Adeyemi makes it seven goals in last three games
The attack-minded BVB lineup overwhelmed the Heidenheim defence time and again early on, with Adeyemi looking especially lively after scoring five goals in two games for the Germany U-21s during the international break.
Adeyemi set up Malen for BVB's opener after 12 minutes, with the Dutch forward firing home from the edge of the box. Five minutes later, Adeyemi made it 2-0 after an excellent counter-attack that also involved Malen and Julian Brandt.
Marvin Pieringer headed home to bring Heidenheim back into the game. But a minute later, Adeyemi restored Borussia Dortmund's two-goal lead after a lovely dummy from Guirassy.
While Borussia Dortmund dominated the first-half, Heidenheim grew into the game after the break. But for a long time, it appeared that BVB's early blitz would be enough for the three points.
The game turned again in the 73rd minute when Maximilian Breunig halved the defecit for Heidenheim from the penalty spot after Niklas Süle was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box.
But Borussia Dortmund managed to hold off Heidenheim, before Emre Can restored the two-goal cushion and the three points via a spot-kick in stoppage time.
The win will come as a huge boost for Borussia Dortmund, who now have the UEFA Champions League to look forward to next week. BVB played some scintillating attacking football over the course of the 90 minutes against Heidenheim. And if they continue to play like this in the coming matches, Sahin's team could find itself in Bundesliga title contention this season.
